Wolfforth Church of Christ gets new pastor
A new minister is leading about 40 people at the Wolfforth Church of Christ.
Ed Jones took over as pastor of the Wolfforth church in July.
“My goal is to work with the members here and provide ministry to them,” Jones said. He said he would also like to get involved in community outreach.
“Ed’s done a good job. He gets out and visits, especially with the sick,” former Wolfforth Mayor L.C. Childers, a church member, said.
Jones said he was first inspired to go into the ministry as a teen.
“When I was in high school, we had a minister that really got me enthused,” Jones said. He is a 1966 graduate of Amarillo High School.
Later, he got a double-bachelor of arts degree from Abilene Christian College, now Abilene Christian University, in Bible and education. He later got a master of arts in Bible.
He started out in campus ministry at Lamar University in Beaumont, and later was a pulpit minister in Olney, Sherman and Beaumont.
Jones and his wife, Norma, have two grown sons living in New York and Lubbock.
Preaching is just one of his jobs. He is also a special education and GED preparation instructor for the Windham School District. He has been a teacher for 22 years and involved in ministry for about 31 years. He taught for 11 years in Lubbock Independent School District.
He was also the principal at Beaumont Christian Schools and an assistant principal at Vidor Junior High School.
In his spare time, he is also involved with Minis and Friends South Plains, which takes miniature horses to schools and nursing homes.
“We visit nursing homes and provide activities for children,” Jones said. The horses are around the size of large dogs, he said, with some dogs being slightly taller. The volunteers have been known to take them into elevators in some nursing homes, leading to strange looks when the doors open, he said.
People enjoy seeing the tiny horses, he said. It often leads older people to reminisce about their youth, and helps some residents who are depressed.
