West Texas native helps Lubbock grow west
Growing up in a small West Texas town, Justin Nairn always dreamed about what it would be like to work with big buildings and cities. Nairn, director of asset management for De La Vega Development, oversees property leasing at Canyon West shopping center. With a passion for understanding how business plans succeed, Nairn is one of the people helping Lubbock grow West.
How did you get started in real estate?
“Really, I’ve always had a fascination with real estate. When I was a kid, I used to draw cities. I guess being from a small town I used to always imagine what it would be like to have big buildings and developments, and what I would like a city to look like. In college, one of my fascinations was with different businesses and how business plans are either successes or failures and studying a successful business plan. In retail real estate, you get to see all these different plans and you get to be a part of trying to help them succeed. It’s our goal, not just to land a tenant out here, but to help that tenant be the best that they can be.”
Family: wife, Stephanie, two daughters, Kaytlynn and Devyn.

Favorite Restaurant: Cracker Barrel.
What was one of your first real estate jobs?
“I had a life-long friend of mine, about eight years ago, when I was a stock broker when I moved back to Lubbock, was a client of mine. I guess you remember the market crash of 2000. I got to witness that first hand. I was a stock broker at the time for Prudential Securities and had a number of clients and the guy was like, ‘This can’t be any fun,’ and I said, ‘No, not really.’ It was just a huge loss every day. Fortunately, I had the chance when he said, ‘Why don’t you just come work for us,’ and I got to be their property manager. I did that for about six, seven years and I just built off that.”
What did you do before you worked with the De La Vega group?
“Well, I’ve worked with a couple of different real estate companies. I met Roger Ship from De La Vega group. I hit him up to see if they needed a third-party management for the group, which they did not. But he liked my background and basically said, ‘Hey would you like to come work for us.’ Through networking it just so happened that we had a good meeting. This is the biggest thing to hit Lubbock as far as retailing in over 30 years, if not longer. I know the mall opened 35 years ago. So to be a part of that and being from West Texas, my entire life was something I couldn’t pass up.”
