The Tiger tennis team has not let youth stand in its way this season.
Frenship begins the regional tournament today at Wichita Falls.
“We have 11 of our top 16 kids who are freshmen and sophomores,” said Frenship head coach Ted Phillips. “We have had a real strong sophomore class. Several of the kids made varsity last year and got their feet wet as freshmen and that has really helped out.”
Phillips is in his first season as the Tigers head coach.
Jesse Wilkenson, Chelcee Metzler and Morgan Rey are the only seniors on the Tiger team.
“We have had very good senior guidance,” said Phillips.
The Tigers road to the regional tournament was completed last week when they defeated Lake View 15-4 at San Angelo.
Frenship was in a win or go home situation against Lake View, and they felt pretty comfortable after winning six of the doubles matches.
“It is always a good feeling when you come out winning six of the doubles,” said Phillips. “Whoever won that match would be going to regionals. Our kids stepped up.”
The Tigers are now faced against some of the top teams in the state at the regional tournament. Frenship has not been able to advance past the regional tournament in the past seasons it has qualified.
Wichita Falls High School and Wichita Falls Rider are two Class 4A powerhouses that make a regular appearance in the state tournament.
The Tigers will also have to get through District 4-4A opponent Abilene Cooper, who beat the Tigers 19-0 during district.
“They (Cooper) beat us 19-0, but we split sets in half of those matches,” said Phillips. “We played with those guys pretty good, and I feel that we can beat them.”
Phillips said his team has responded well to playing tough competition.
“We have no reason to be afraid of anyone,” said Phillips. “We feel like we have a strong line-up all the way through.”
