FFA students, teacher earn awards at agriculture events
Dale Schaffner was honored by the Texas Tech University department of agricultural education and communications April 22 with the distinguished alumni award, while several Frenship FFA students earned awards at the state judging contest at Texas Tech.
The agricultural communication team took seventh in state. They got to the competition with a first-place finish in district and second in area. Team members are: Tyler Arnold, radio broadcasting; Meagan Lee, press release, 10th-high individual in state; Kelsey Miller, news writing; Graysen Ortega, web page design; and Courtney Pinkston, page layout and photo editing.
The wool team placed 19th after taking first in district and area. team members are Matt Harney, Summitt Hogue and Corbin Lee.
The cotton team took ninth after placing first in district and area. Team members are: Melina Alvarado; Lisa Grant, 11th-high individual; Morgan Hector; and Ashleigh Willems, sixth-high individual.
The horse team of Ryan Dykes, Seth Kiker and Danielle Youngquist placed 57th in state after taking first in district and second in area.
The livestock team took seventh after placing first in district and area. Team members are Codie Bermea, Lee Conoly, Chris Dalton, Summitt Hogue, Maci McCabe, Nathan Pond, Brady Ragland and Kaitlyn Schaffner.
The meats team took 28th in state after placing first in district and third in area. Team members are Tyler Arnold, Kris Hernandez, Kristin McKay, Tabor McMillan, Rebecca Neel, Graysen Ortega and Hannah Weaver.
The poultry team took 34th in state after placing first in district and fifth in area. Team members are Melina Alvarado, Kelsey Conners, Ryan Dykes, Lisa Grant, Morgan Hector, Ashleigh Willems and Danielle Youngquist.
The dairy cattle team took 27th in state after placing first in district and second in area. Team members are Bo Cates, Holly Combs, Austin Drake, Matt Harney and Jacob Parsons.
The farm business management team took 27th after placing first in district and third in area. Team members are Bo Cates, Abby Drake, Austin Drake and Graysen Ortega.
The Wildlife team will compete at state May 13. They qualified for the competition by placing second in district and fourth in area. Team members are Marshall Elliott, Chas Holder and Colby McDaniel.
The floriculture team took 68th in state after placing second in district and area. Team members are Melanie Braune, Abby Drake, Stephanie Hall and Crysta Rodgers.
Frenship High School show choir finishes strong at competition
The Frenship High School show choir competed in the Lone Star Showcase of Music April 25 at the Irving Performing Arts Center.
The choir was the defending champion from last year’s competition. It received the Outstanding Trophy Award with a first-division rating in performance and a Best In Class Trophy Award for a first-place finish in the 4A show choirs.
Melissa Merimon, a Frenship High School senior and the group’s choreographer, was named outstanding choreographer.
Terra Vista Middle School artists take awards at art competition
Terra Vista Middle School art students competed in the annual Visual Arts Scholastic Event for junior high students on April 26 at Idalou Middle School.
All 16 Frenship entries earned awards. Individual results are: Zac Caballero, two superior ratings in metal sculpture and crayon etching; Chris Morrison, two superior ratings in mixed-media sculpture and paper mache sculpture; Stephanie Rebong, one superior rating in oil pastel drawing; Jacob Richardson, two superior ratings in graphite drawing and crayon etching; Brittnay Snead, one superior rating in graphite drawing; Grant Solis, one superior rating in graphite drawing; Kenneth Tam, one superior rating in oil pastel drawing, one excellent rating in paper mache sculpture; Joseph Trejo, two superior ratings in pastel drawing and paper mache sculpture; Marissa Valadez, one superior rating in pastel drawing; and Ashley Villa, two superior ratings in graphite drawing and pastel drawing.
Frenship twirlers place in regional championship in Denton
Several Frenship students placed in the Southwest Regional Championship and Miss Majorette Pageant. Individual results are:
Whitney Reynolds, 12th grade, third place intermediate senior Miss Majorette of the Southwest, first place intermediate strut, first place beginner two baton, first place three baton, fourth place intermediate solo and eighth place, Miss Southwest Modeling.
Amber Warren, 11th grade, first place novice solo, first place novice X strut, second place Miss Southwest Modeling and third place beginner Miss Southwest Majorette Pageant.
Billie Swearington, eighth grade, fourth place basic solo, fifth place basic strut and seventh place basic skills.
Kaitlen McNeill, seventh grade, 10th place solo and 12th place basic skills.
Leah SoRelle, seventh grade, third place solo, third place best appearing modeling, fourth place Southwest Basic Skills pre-teen, fifth place strut, sixth place two baton and eighth place X strut.
Sarah Baker, seventh grade, fifth place solo, seventh place best appearing modeling, eighth place two baton and eighth place Southwest Basic Skills pre-teen.
Sabrina Warren, fifth grade, first place novice solo, first place novice basic strut and fourth place basic skills pageant.
Brook Bowman, third grade, second place basic skills, third place solo, third place strut, third place best appearing modeling and fifth place best costume.
