Q&A with Sam Clark
Q: How do you feel the softball season is going so far?
A: It’s really good. Last year we were a really young team, but I feel like this year we’ve really matured a lot and we put it all together as a group of girls and we all get along. Its just been a great season especially it being my senior year and all.
Q: How has the team progressed at the plate since the beginning of the season?
A: We do have power hitters and they really come through for us in clutch times, but we are a very fast team and we have a lot of slappers and they can place the ball really well. Even some of our power hitters are able to place it. We can pull out those runs when we need them the most.
Q: How are you feeling about the way you have been able to perform thus far?
A: Last season was kind of rough for me because I was going through a lot of injuries, but this season I’m healthy and I’ve been working a lot in the offseason to get ready for 6A and everything. I know my team is there to back me up no matter what. I feel really good about this season and I think it’s going to end really well.
Q: Who are some teammates that have shown they can step up when needed?
A: You know, I think all them step up when we need them to. I don’t think there is really just one that I can because we’re all leaders on the team and even the young girls are able to step up and keep us positive when we get down. It’s just a group effort really.
Q: Are the younger players fitting in with the senior class?
A: We’ve pulled up some freshmen for the tournaments that we’ve gone to and they are all so sweet and I love them. They’re just really positive and they are excited to be there. It just kind of reminds me of why I started playing the game and watching them play the game is great.
Q: Do you help mentor the younger players in their transition to the varsity level?
A: Yeah. I try to help them as much as I can. Just kind of getting them ready for the varsity level and just telling them how everything works and helping them get into the groove of things also.
Q: You guys open up district play against Monterey on Tuesday, how are you feeling about the matchup?
A: I’m feeling good. I think Monterey is a pretty solid team this year also. I think it’s going to be a good game, but I think we’re ready. I think it’s a great game for a district opener. Especially because they are a Lubbock team and we know a lot of the girls. It’s going to be a great game.
Q: What are you expecting to see in the game against Monterey?
A: I don’t really know a whole lot on what they have. I know they have some good pitching this year and I mean they did really well in the tournament we were in with them and I think they are going to be a solid team all around.
