Pre-kindergarten students learn it’s better to give than receive

Pre-kindergarten students at Westwind Elementary School are learning that sometimes it is better to give than to receive.

The school’s youngest students are participating in Toys for Tots. Instead of bringing a present to exchange with other students, they are bringing presents to give to children who might not otherwise receive a Christmas gift.

“I just tell the kids it’s better to give than receive,” said Bobbie Jo Connor, a pre-kindergarten teacher at Westwind.

Connor has had her students participate in Toys for Tots for about five years. Some years the children seem to understand more than others, she said, but this year’s students were enthusiastic about giving.

“I sent the note home last week. I told them about it yesterday,” she said. “When I told them about it yesterday, they were like, ‘I’m going to bring four things.’ They’re really excited.”

The students enthusiasm is notable because most of the students are in the half-day pre-kindergarten classes because of their socioeconomic background.

“They’re kinda struggling anyway,” she said.

Connor said some of the kindergarten classes at Westwind are also participating in Toys for Tots.
