Mother, daughter teach math at Frenship Middle School
Teaching is a family affair for Becky Weatherly and Beth Lopez.
The mother/daughter team is wrapping up its second year at Frenship Middle School as math teachers. During their time at the school, they have drawn off of each others’ experiences and shared their love of teaching.
Frenship Today: Becky, you were teaching at a high school and Beth was teaching at an elementary school. How did you both start working for Frenship Middle School?
Becky: “I was afraid (Beth) was going to quit teaching, and so I called (Tye Rogers, Frenship Middle School assistant principal) and said ‘I wish you would interview her and I think she would like to teach in middle school,’ even though she never had. He hired her and he started calling me, asking if I would like to teach with Beth, and I couldn’t pass that up.”
FT: Is it sometimes challenging to work together?
Beth: “I think teaching’s such a hard thing to do, it’s so demanding that it’s nice to have my mom to vent to and we can talk to each other about our frustrations.”
Becky: “One of the other teachers asked me one day ‘I couldn’t work with my mother. How do ya’ll get along?’ and I said ‘We just respect each others’ space and when we need time alone, we kind of leave each other alone.’”
FT: Does anyone else in your family teach?
