Major goal fulfilled by Frenship valedictorian
Not many high school seniors can say they have completed a major 10-year personal goal already.
Abby Drake was recently named valedictorian of Frenship High School’s 75th class, the class of 2011.
“I’ve had this goal since second grade,” said Abby. At her cousin’s graduation, she watched the valedictorian get up to speak and decided she also wanted to be first in her class.
It was only in the last year she felt like she might actually not meet her goal.
“I have to say, my senior year especially, I’ve been really pushed,” Abby said.
But she said she is glad that her teachers gave her challenging assignments as well as encouragement.
As Abby prepares to attend Texas A&M in the fall, she said she hopes to study agribusiness.
“I decided that I really liked the atmosphere at A&M and all that it had to offer,” she said.
Abby’s next goal is to graduate from college with honors, which she said should be less stressful than trying to graduate at the very top of the class.
“It’s kind of nice that I don’t have a major goal,” she said.
During her time at FHS, Abby was the president of FFA this past year, a member of National Honor Society and a band and twirling student in her first two years.
She was commended by the National Merit Scholarship Foundation in the fall.
During all four years, she competed in speaking events with FFA, which she said will help her to deliver a valedictory address at the high school graduation at 3 p.m. on Sunday at United Spirit Arena.
“FFA really got me out of my shell,” said Abby.
Her favorite subjects, she said, are history and government.
Outside of school, she works at Peoples Bank as a teller every other day and most Saturdays.
She likes banking, she said, but ultimately, she hopes to be a lawyer.
“I really want to be a prosecuting attorney,” said Drake. “I get mad when people break the rules. It’s a natural fit.”
