Frenship quintet named academic all-state
One year after making program history, the Frenship cheer program impressed again at the state level.
Tiger cheerleaders Cara Flores, Katlyn Garcia, Abby Wetsel, Emily Black and Daisy Martinez were named Texas Girls Coaches Association (TGCA) Academic All-State members — a feat cheer coach Kayci Smith was proud to see members of her team accomplish.
“I am humbled as the coach because I have been to have so many amazing athletes come through the Frenship program,” she said. “To see them to be recognized on such a higher level and a grander scheme, I am proud of them. I am always proud of them whether we get awards or not. This is just for everyone else to see on a daily basis how amazing they are and how lucky we are to have them.”
According to its website, the TGCA is one of the largest associations of coaches and the largest association for coaches of girls’ athletics in the United States.
Established in 1953 with a membership of less than 100, it has grown to an excess of 7,000 members today and includes coaches and administrators in all levels of education.
For Wetsel, who is the team’s captain, and Martinez this is their second time earning the honor. The pair were apart of the the first Frenship squad members to receive the award last year, as well.
TGCA selects 30 student-athletes for the award, with Frenship tying Lewisville for the most cheerleaders (five) to be selected.
“I take a lot of pride in that it’s hard. (Class) 6A is a whole other division and we are all learning that here at Frenship,” Smith said. “Just to see how hard these girls work on and off the field and court is just so humbling as a coach to see that they take just as much pride in their schoolwork as they do being cheerleaders and leading the student body and cheering on their teams.”
