Frenship principal headed to Harvard

One Frenship principal will be heading to Harvard for the summer.

Doug Smith, the principal of Oak Ridge Elementary School, is one of 100 principals chosen to travel on an all-expenses-paid trip to Massachusetts for coursework in leadership.

Smith said he was told thousands of principals in Texas applied through Raise Your Hand Texas, but only 100 were accepted.

“I really didn’t think I’d get picked,” Smith said. “Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought I’d be going to Harvard.”

He will participate in a class from July 6-12 called “Leadership: An Evolving Vision.”

The class is intended for experienced school leaders, and aims to help them strengthen their leadership and management skills and revitalize their personal vision of leadership.

“I’m really excited about it. I really am. It’s neat because, after spending time in the Marine Corps and going through different leadership classes and sergeant classes, you know, the Marine Corps is built on that,” said Smith, a veteran of the war in Iraq. “The more important thing will be how I apply it to what I do every day.”

The principal said he is also excited because of the potential to take in the history of the area, as well as a possible Red Sox game.
