Frenship grad celebrates new daughter, 10-year reunion

Much has changed in the decade since Nikki Cope was a cheerleader at Frenship High School.

For one, her name is now Nikki Richburg. She married her high school sweetheart, Chris Richburg.

She is also on maternity leave for another week or so after having her first child, a daughter named Blakely.

Despite her teenage desire to leave Lubbock and go into public relations, she ultimately changed majors and became a teacher. She is now a fourth-grade math teacher at North Ridge Elementary School.

After traveling for a few years with Chris, who was a minor league baseball player, she said they decided to come home to the Lubbock area, where their families lived and where they wanted to raise their family.

Traveling and being out in the real world was surprising, she said.

“In Lubbock, we are kind of in a bubble,” Richburg said, adding it’s a small, family-friendly community. People are not as nice and willing to help out in other areas, she said.

Nikki and Chris Richburg were graduates of the FHS class of 2004. This weekend, 55 of the 303 graduates of 2004 came back to Frenship for a 10-year reunion, which Nikki helped organize.

“It was great to see people’s families,” Richburg said. “Everyone had improved for the better.”

Richburg will soon be returning to North Ridge Elementary School.

“This is my sixth year to teach, and I love it,” she said. “Every day is kind of an adventure and something different.”

In the future, Richburg said she hopes to continue adding to her family, but she also wants to travel the world.

“We’d like to help out in the community, be more involved in the community and our church,” Richburg said.

In the short term, though, she’ll continue teaching, running, reading and working in her flower beds.
