Frenship celebrates egg hunts, cantatas and services for Easter
While most Christians will observe Easter next weekend during a church service, many Frenship churches are planning elaborate egg hunts, cantatas and special services.
The Experience Life church, which has grown in attendance from 800 to about 1,700 since September, will drop some of the 50,000 plastic eggs members have accumulated from a helicopter at Lowrey Field April 10 from 5 to 7 p.m.
Tim Beal, the student and family pastor at Experience Life, which meets in the skating rink at the Sportsplex, 7116 82nd Street, said the church sponsored a similar egg drop last year, and was woefully unprepared for 5,000 people who showed up to hunt the 5,000 Easter eggs they had prepared.
“We were just blown away by the reaction,” said Beal. So this year they will have 10 times as many eggs and many more things for families to do at the event, including inflatable bouncers for kids, games and free hot dogs and drinks.
“We’re going to have a ton of giveaways,” said Beal, listing console gaming systems and flat-screen televisions among the prizes. A rock band will be playing music from the ’80s and now.
Not all of the 50,000 eggs will fit into a helicopter, but Beal said a military-style helicopter this year should hold at least 5,000 eggs. Last year, he said, a much smaller helicopter held 1,000 plastic Easter eggs. This year, the remaining eggs will be distributed around Lowrey Field prior to the event. Some eggs will also be placed in a section cordoned off for smaller children to hunt as well, he said. The eggs will contain small toys or candy.
“We’re trying to make this as un-churchy as possible,” said Beal. But he added, “We’re not trying to remove God from Easter.”
Instead, he said the church wants to do something for the community.
“Our goal is just to give you something to do with your kid that will be fun, that will be free,” said Beal. His hope is that people will come, have fun, fellowship and want to go to a church somewhere.
On the weekend, the church will also hold four Easter services, including one at 5 p.m. April 11, and three on April 12 at 8:30 a.m., 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.
During the Easter services, the church will start a new series of sermons called Confessions of a Preacher, but Beal declined to give a synopsis of the sermon that will be given by Pastor Chris Galanos.
