Frenship High School’s new dance instructor may not have really thought about a return to the school, but it has been a very pleasant surprise in her life to be a Tiger again.

“I guess the Frenship pride never left me. It wasn’t that I never saw myself back there, it just never crossed my mind,” said Kali Drachenberg, a member of the class of 2004. “I loved it as a student, and now, as a teacher, the administration is so great. You have so much support. And the kids are great, and that makes a big difference, too.”

Up until February, Drachenberg said she thought she was going to move and audition to perform musical theater.

“When I student taught at O.L. Slaton Junior High, I just fell in love with teaching. So I didn’t pursue performing because I really wanted to teach,” said Drachenberg. “Dancing is my passion, and I love students. I love that I can give students the opportunity to learn to dance, and to appreciate it as an art form, or to appreciate all art forms.”

Drachenberg will be teaching a jazz dance class, as well as a dance combo class that will focus on ballet, modern dance and tap. This is the first year for Frenship High to have the dance combo course. But this isn’t the first time for Drachenberg to be a part of a first in FHS dance history – her senior year at FHS was also the first year the dance program was available.

She is teaching freshmen through senior girls at FHS.

“We had one male, and he dropped my class after the first day. I was really sad, I was excited about having a boy. You would think he would want to stay,” said Drachenberg.

Drachenberg graduated from Texas Tech with a major in dance and minors in education and music. While at college, she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta, Chi Tau Epsilon, Student Government Association, Gamma Beta Phi, the Texas Tech Dance Company, Lubbock Chorale and Presidents Select, a group that leads tours for incoming freshmen and helps to recruit students and athletes. She also was active in theater and in several dance concerts. She performed in the Lubbock Midnight Musicals as well.
