FMS student marks a first for district

A Frenship Middle School student is the first from the district selected to perform in the Texas Choral Directors Association Middle School All-State Honor Choir in San Antonio in July.

Ryan Smith, who will be an eighth-grader next fall, won many achievements through the Hardy Boys Choir this year, including first chair in the All-Region Choir and a first division solo award. As part of the Hardy Boys Choir, he won the sweepstakes trophy and Outstanding Middle School Varsity Choir trophy at the Greater Southwest Music Festival.

The top 200 middle school choir students in the state are selected as part of the TCDA Middle School All-State Honor Choir, which will perform in San Antonio July 27-30.

Jared Hardy, the FHS assistant choral director and Hardy Boys director, said this is the first time any Frenship student has been selected to perform with the group, and Smith is one of 30 bass singers in the state selected.

Smith said he sang “My Country Tis of Thee” on a recorded audition CD, and later learned he had been selected.

“I’m really excited about it,” he said.

Smith started singing in the sixth-grade choir, but he said already, music has become a big part of his life.

“Music is really important in my life, next to my family and God,” he said.

Smith takes lessons in voice and piano. In addition to choir, Smith is also involved in showing pigs with FFA and on the FMS golf team.
