FHS Latin Club qualifies 9 for national competition

The Frenship High School Latin Club impressed at the Texas State Junior Classical League Convention last weekend.

Twenty-six of 31 Tiger participants were recognized at the convention held at Sandra Day O’Connor High School in San Antonio. Nine of the students qualified for national competition.

Frenship’s Emily Bayliss (sculpture and pottery), Katie Chaffin (polychromatic drawing), Jacob Evans (model), Tara Findley (poetry) and KenLea Frederick (vocal solo) qualifed for the National Junior Classical League Competition in their respective categories. Ashley Lang (Latin literature), Katie Tucker (Latin derivative), Lexi Voorhies (oil/acrylic painting, monochromatic drawing, and Greek Life & Literature) and Jordyn Wainscott (watercolor/pastel) will join their classmates at the national competition in July in Alabama.

According to its website, the National Junior Classical League, which was formed in 1936, is an organization of junior and senior high school students sponsored by the American Classical League. Composed of local and state/provincial chapters across the United States, Canada and Australia, it is the largest Classical organization in the world today with over 50,000 members.

The league’s purpose is to encourage an interest and appreciation of various cultural aspects of Greece and Rome, understanding of the debt of modern culture to that of classical antiquity.

During the national convention, students compete in academic contests, Certamen, creative arts contests, graphic arts contests and Olympika contests

Pentathlon Magna Cum Laude — Ethan Allen, Clara Baker, Emily Bayliss, Luke Blackmon, Katie Chaffin, Katina; Matilac, Christian Meador, Jowie Patano, Jordyn Wainscott;

1st in Ludi Volleyball;

2nd in Ludi Catapult.
