Character Wins: Sixteen FHS seniors awarded Frenship Foundation for Leadership scholarships

Sixteen seniors have been announced as the recipients of Frenship Foundation for Leadership Scholarship.

Terry Kinard, the director of the Foundation for Leadership, said that is up from 12 last year, but he added, “It’s not about increases. It’s honestly, how many kids qualify. If you look at our scholarship, the way it’s set up, they have to get 90 percent to qualify.”

Students are scored on their character by their teachers.

Because of that, Kinard said the amount of money and the amount of scholarships given will always vary.

This year, he said he suspects the amount will be between $3,000 and $3,500. But another variable is the success of this weekend’s golf tournament at Shadow Hills Golf Course, one of several fundraisers the Foundation for Leadership puts on each year.

For the students’ part, they are grateful even before knowing the amount they will receive.

“It’s going to help out tremendously,” said Brooke Aulds.

“I’m really glad people thought well enough of me to invest in my future. So I’m grateful,” said Maegan Ladd.

Winners also said the scholarship means a lot to them because they are given to students based on their character.

“I think it means a lot, because it doesn’t judge your success, but it judges who you are, and I like that,” said recipient Graysen Ortega.

Emily Rivenbark said that while student athletes may win scholarships, sports may only last a few years.

“Character lasts forever,” she said.

“It was the most rewarding scholarship that I got, I can tell you that,” said Kaitlyn Schaffner.
