Both are part of Wolfforth United Methodist’s Men’s weekend calendars in May and early June.

The annual pancake breakfast is set for 7-10 a.m. Saturday in the church at 102 Donald Preston Drive.

A golf tournament sponsored by the men’s group also is set on June 7 at Reese Center, said DeLoach.

Rusty DeLoach, who is directing the pancake breakfast, said the breakfast has been a church tradition for more than 10 years.

“I know it’s been going on at least 12 or 14 years,” he said.

But instead of having it on election day as in years past, DeLoach said this year’s pancake breakfast is a week earlier.

“We’ll have it a week beforehand,” he said.

All the pancake breakfast’s proceeds will aid in sending children to summer church camps, said DeLoach.

“We pay half (the funds) of each child to go to church camp,” he said.

DeLoach said he’s had a good turnout in years past, but hopes for more attendees this year.

“It’d be great if more of the city (attended the breakfast),” he said. “We always have a good turnout from the church. There’s always a few non-members who join us. It would be nice if we have a few more.”

Donations will be accepted at the pancake breakfast, he said.

The golf tournament in early June also is planned, said DeLoach.

“It’s a scramble tournament. The bigger, the better,” said DeLoach. “We are looking for sponsors for holes.”

For more information, call DeLoach at 778-1040.

Nick Hanslik signed a letter of intent to play baseball for Texas Tech University Monday at the Frenship media center.

Hanslik is a four-year letterman and leads the Frenship baseball team with a .427 batting average, five home runs, six doubles, 10 triples and 48 RBIs. He was also a three-year starter on the football team at linebacker, receiver and quarterback.

He decided last week to commit to Texas Tech.

“It is a good opportunity for me to stay in town so my parents and friends will be able to come and watch me play,” he said.

Hanslik was considering attending the University of Houston as a walk-on, but Tech offered him a scholarship.

Chad Reynolds, Frenship head coach, played for Texas Tech from 1996-2000, and Chris Richburg, former Frenship standout, is currently playing for Tech.

“I talked a lot to Reynolds and Richburg and they helped me make my decision,” said Hanslik. “They told me to choose what I felt was best for me, but they also told me all the good things about Tech.”

Hanslik looks forward to playing for Larry Hays, Texas Tech head baseball coach.

“He is one of a kind,” said Hanslik. “His record tells you what kind of coach he is and how much he cares about winning.”

Hanslik said playing at Tech will give him the opportunity to compete alongside former rivals.

“It will be cool to play with A.J (Ramos) and Chad (Bettis),” said Hanslik.

Ramos played for Estacado and Bettis played for Monterey.

Hanslik said he is glad to finally sign with a team so he can focus on the season at hand, which continues when the Tigers face Hereford at 7 p.m. today at Levelland. Game two of the best-of-three series will be played at 1 p.m. Saturday at Amarillo High, and a third game will follow if needed.

They’ve been working on the railway.

Permian Basin Railway officials showed off some 30 miles of its track to Lubbock and Levelland officials April 25.

The train made three runs from Cagle Steaks in the Frenship Community to the ethanol plant in Levelland and back.

The $4 million upgrade allows the railway to ship materials to and from the ethanol plant and might also include scenic line rides in the future.

“Not a lot of people know about these short-line railroads. We’ve stepped up our business and have helped bring business to the West Texas area. We want to make people understand we are here and we are around. We are here to support the community.”

Permian Basin Railways was formed in May 2002 when Iowa Pacific Holding purchased and combined the Texas New Mexico Railroad and the West Texas & Lubbock Railway.

“This (train ride) was to create awareness of our railroad in general,” said Pierce Adams, an account representative for Permian Basin Railway.

Adams said the railway is in talks with John Cagle of Cagle Steaks, Visit Lubbock and others about bringing some general passenger rides to the area in the off-season. It would possibly include a train ride as soon as the Christmas season or be used to take Texas Tech boosters to and from games.

One of the challenges is finding the passenger cars. The company operates a line, the Rio Grande Scenic Railroad, in Colorado. It is used as a scenic railway during the spring and summer months. Using the passenger cars in the winter months may be the answer.

“I see (the scenic railroad coming) in the next six months to one year,” said Adams. “We are still putting together the logistics. Maybe we can bring it down to where it wouldn’t hurt our scenic railroad and have enough engineers to run on the freight and the scenic route.”

Sarah Qureshi and Jared Cookston, Frenship High School seniors, recently earned Best of Texas awards from the Texas Career and Technology Council.

Qureshi was named the Best of Texas Outstanding Business Education Student. She is the only student in the state to receive the award. Cookston was a runner-up for Best of Texas Outstanding Trade and Industries Student.

“I was just very, very thankful that I received an award and very honored,” said Qureshi.

The students were recognized April 21 at an awards ceremony in Austin. To receive the award, the students had to be nominated by a career technology education instructor, get two letters of support and complete an essay and resume.

Cookston said the hardest part of the application process was “getting all the paperwork together and making sure everything’s right.”

Along with the awards, the students received scholarships totaling $800 for Qureshi and $500 for Cookston.

The scholarships will help the students with their goals. Qureshi intends to major in business then move on to pre-med and medical school. Cookston is debating between going into trade and industries or horticulture.

A sunny spring helped workers pull ahead on Spur 327 construction.

The Texas Department of Transportation, which broke ground on the project in January, moved a little ahead of schedule because of a sunny spring.

“We are a little bit ahead on the bridge portion,” said Penny Mason, a public information officer for the Texas Department of Transportation.

The completion date for the $23.5 million project was originally set sometime late this year or early 2009.

When the spur project is finished, it would add a limited access freeway facility along Spur 327 from South Loop 289 to U.S. 62-82,

Traffic remains down to one lane at the Milwaukee intersection. The spur is being built in two phases, with the first phase from the South Loop to just east of Milwaukee Avenue. This phase also includes an interchange at Frankford Avenue.

Plans call for building main lanes, rebuilding the frontage road system along the spur and constructing a concrete intersection at Milwaukee for a future interchange that will be built in the second phase of the project.

In addition to the Milwaukee interchange, the second phase includes extending the main lanes from Milwaukee to U.S. 62-82 and building an interchange at U.S. 62-82 and the spur.

The second phase won’t begin until TxDOT begins the last phase of the Marsha Sharp Freeway. It will extend the freeway to about a mile southwest of Wolfforth, said James Combes, Brownfield TxDOT area engineer.

“The goal right now is to complete the Frankford Avenue overpass to alleviate traffic congestion and to prepare the area for a full freeway facility,” said Combes.

With the population increase in Southwest Lubbock, traffic volumes have increased and caused some congestion, particularly during morning and afternoon commute hours.
