Acts of Kindness honoree wins for being a friend
The first Acts of Kindness award winner at Frenship High School for the 2013-14 school year said she is excited about winning an award, but believes she was just being a friend.
Mashay Garza has been friends with another junior for the past two years of high school. Her friend has a problem hearing.
“I guess she’s comfortable with me, so I always help her with her stuff and we walk to class together. I’m her friend,” Mashay said.
Susan Perez, a health science technology teacher, said Mashay’s friend has to work very hard in class.
“Mashay Garza is so helpful to this student, including her in group activities, walking with her to lunch sometimes, helping her to understand what to do in class at times, just making her feel included,” Perez said in nominating Mashay for the Parent Teacher Student Association’s Acts of Kindness award. “Mashay has such a friendly and outgoing attitude. She is a real asset to our classroom and will be excellent in her chosen field in the medical field.”
Although she was excited about being honored, Mashay said she didn’t expect it.
“I was just being her friend,” she said. “She’s just funny; she just makes my day.”
Mashay plans to study to be a sonographer in the future, and hopes to live in Houston.
Mashay was the first Acts of Kindness winner at FHS, and was honored for the month of October.
