Students in bus accident treated and released
Five children who were transported to University Medical Center following a bus accident in front of Westwind Elementary School on Tuesday.
The five children included Dusty Thetford, 7; Robert Farris, 5; Cyril Mencias, 8; Aleeandra Hatter, 7; and Destiny Allen, 10, according to a police report from the Lubbock Police Department.
Eric Finley, a spokesman for UMC, said all of the children were treated and released.
There were 43 people on the bus at the time of the accident, including driver Morgan Lee Stripling, 36. The 42 children ranged in age from 5 to 11.
According to the incident report, the bus struck a red 2004 Mazda driven by Monica Grace Ojeda, 33.
Ojeda had three children — ages 4, 7 and 9 — in her car. None of the passengers in Ojeda’s car were transported to the hospital.
The Lubbock police report notes the accident occurred in an active school zone around 3:20 p.m.
The police investigator’s notes state Stripling “failed to control speed in the 6400 block of 43rd and collided into (Ojeda) who was stopped for traffic.”
“There was no citation on that wreck,” Sgt. Jonathan Stewart said Friday.
