Frenship athletes honored for acts of kindness

Two Frenship High School juniors are being honored this month by the Parent Teacher Student Association for their acts of kindness in December.

Craig Kiser and Tyler Craiger were nominated by Janise Wertz, a life skills teacher.

Wertz said in her nomination that Craid is a student of hers, but Tyler is his friend who offered to help on a special project for the holidays.

Craig, Wertz said, “does a wonderful job working with some very special and exceptional students.”

Wertz said Craig spent his own time after school helping her to decorate for the holidays.

“A friend of Craig’s, Tyler Craiger, stopped to help out as well, and he is not even one of my students’ aides,” she said. “Tyler was more than willing to step in and help out with the project and even offered to come the following morning before school to do more.”

Craig and Tyler are both student athletes. Craig plays baseball and football, as well as working at United Supermarket, and Tyler is involved in football, track and DECA.

Craig said he had a free period last semester and a counselor guided him toward assisting in the life skills classes. He is continuing in that class this semester and hopes to remain involved next year.

“It was really warming to see, they didn’t even know you, but they come up and hug you,” he said.

Someday, Craig said, he hopes to go into law enforcement.

“I’ve just always liked the thought of having my own cop car,” he joked. “It’s a job that keeps you on your toes.”

Tyler downplays his involvement in helping to create a holiday display for Wertz.

“I really didn’t have anything to do after school except to go home and sleep,” he said.

Tyler said the experience made an impression on him. Even though he was just around the classroom for a few days, he said the life skills students continue to make him feel like he is a part of their community.

“Those kids are great. They always just say hi to everybody,” he said. “They still come up and give me a hug.”

Tyler said if he doesn’t get a football scholarship to college, he plans to go into the Air Force.

Wertz said Craig and Tyler are wonderful examples of kindness.

“It continues to warm my heart when I see young adults act in kind, respectful and helpful ways,” she said.
