Wolfforth OKs park for emergency exercise

The Lubbock Amateur Radio Club will be holding an emergency exercise in Patterson Park this weekend after the Wolfforth Council approved a variance allowing them to stay in the park past the normal 10 p.m. closing time.

Wolfforth Council members voted 4-0 to approve the variance. Councilman Ramiro Villarreal was not present.

Two Lubbock Amateur Radio Club members told the council that ham radio enthusiasts from all over will be taking part in the exercise to work on their skills.

“When cell phones go down, amateur radio will work,” Lewis Lehman, president of the club, told the council.

He said in recent hurricanes, officials were able to use ham radios when other communications systems failed.

The club members will use a generator to power their radios for Amateur Radio Field Day in Patterson Park from 1 p.m. Saturday until 1 p.m. Sunday.

“We encourage the public to come out,” Lehman said.

Club members also asked to park a trailer with a radio tower in the back of the park.

Mayor Charles Addington told the members to seek guidance from Wolfforth Director of Public Works Doug Hutcheson about where to park the trailer.

Council members also voted 4-0 to waive rental fees for the Wolfforth Fire Academy to use the Wolfforth Training Center for two years so academy leaders can use the money to upgrade the audio-visual equipment in the training center.

The council also unanimously approved a change to the city’s personnel policy stating that a full-time employee works 30 or more hours per week.

Councilman Randy Gross asked about the city’s drug policy for city personnel, but City Secretary Debbie Perkey said the drug policy for workers is a separate policy.

Addington proclaimed June as the 2012 Colorectal Cancer Prevention and Awareness Month, and gave the family of former Councilman Jose Rosales a plaque in honor of his service.

Council members will meet Thursday at 11:30 a.m. at the Wolfforth Training Center in order to explain the role of the council and the city departments.
