Frenship players relish ASCO Football Classic
Saturday’s ASCO Football Classic had all the razzle dazzle of a backyard game, and that was perfectly fine with Frenship players.
The Blue team, featuring five Tigers, defeated the Red team — whose only Frenship representative was Tucker Tuberville — 38-21 behind nearly 600 yards of offense and a bevy of quick screens and new plays for the Tigers out of the familiar spread set.
David Ortiz, who played center in the game at Cooper’s Pirate Stadium, had a trio of quarterbacks playing behind him, each with a unique style.
“It was cool to see the different type of QB styles,” Ortiz said. “We had a runner, we had one with a good arm, and we had one that could do it all.”
Although the week leading up to the game, as well as the game itself, was an experience, Ortiz said lining up with a few Tigers, as well as some former foes, was the best experience of the game.
A.J. Carter, Zak Britton, Chad Quisenberry and Colton Estill joined Ortiz on the Blue team, with Ortiz the only offensive player.
Quisenberry sat out the game because of an injury during pregame warm-ups.
Although Ortiz wasn’t directly responsible for the 586 yards of offense the Blue squad amassed — including 324 through the air — he relished the chance to get to block downfield and hit some of the smaller defensive backs.
“At Frenship we didn’t really have too many screen plays, and we didn’t have the wide receiver throw back,” Ortiz said. “Being able to do that, it was a great experience.”
The rest of the Blue team Tigers were relatively quiet during the game, although the defense quietly forced four turnovers and five punts.
Tuberville was constantly harassed when on the field, finishing 4-for-8 with 115 yards, an interception and a touchdown.
He was, however, part of one of the most exciting plays on the day.
Trailing 21-7 in the second quarter after the Blue squad’s attack gashed the Red defense, Midland Lee’s Travis Williams went for a quick screen as the Blue team blew it up and forced quarterback Tuberville to run.
“Tuberville was just trying to find somebody,” said Williams, who will play at Trinity University in San Antonio in the fall. “He looked up and I just took up the sideline thinking nobody was out there and got it and scored.”
All three of the Red team’s scores came from long passes, 69 and 46 yards in addition to the Tuberville screen, as Red failed to best the Blue defense with anything more.
Britton, who will be rooming with Tuberville at Texas Tech in the fall, said there was plenty of friendly banter between the two all week — although Britton never got a good lick on his quarterback.
Like Ortiz, Britton felt the chemistry of the group of all-stars, despite not ever playing with the vast majority of them.
“We played together for three of four days, but it felt like we had been together for a month,” Britton said.
Although Quisenberry had to sit back and watch his teammates harass Tuberville — something he said he wished he could have partook in — the graduating senior still relished the week leading up to the game.
“It was a really cool deal getting to play with a lot of guys that we played with over the years, and also those guys from other schools,” he said. “You get to come together and be on a team.”
