National Merit Scholar Finalist from Frenship to attend Texas Tech

A Frenship High School senior has been named a National Merit Scholar Finalist.

Drew Macha was notified earlier this month that he had been chosen as a finalist.

Seniors are notified in the fall semester by the National Merit Scholar Corp. that their scores on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test were high enough to be either commended or semifinalists.

Four FHS students were commended: Hanna Bunting, Matthew Howard, Sean Cartwright and Taylor Lindgren. As a semifinalist, Macha was able to apply for the next level.

But Macha said he has not been waiting on pins and needles since the fall.

“When I turned in the application, there was nothing else I could do,” he said Friday during a break from an FHS band rehearsal.

The recognition for his status as a National Merit Scholar Finalist has been nice, he said. Although he won’t find out until later this spring whether he has won one of the scholarships attached to the National Merit Scholarship Program, he said he got a private tour of Texas Tech, met with the president and the chancellor, and also got to speak with Ed Whitacre Jr., for whom the College of Engineering at Texas Tech is named.

It was Whitacre, a former chief executive officer of AT&T and General Motors, who Macha said persuaded him to attend Tech. But he said the fact that his parents and siblings have attended school there also helped.

“It’s kind of a family tradition,” Macha said.

While at Tech, Macha plans to major in chemical engineering.

“I hope to be on the Texas Tech drum line. That’s one of my goals for next fall,” Macha said. During his years at Frenship, Macha was the captain of the drum line, and was also involved in tennis. During his younger years at Frenship, he was also active in the Junior Classical League.

At this point, Macha said he is only thinking in terms of short-term goals like obtaining his bachelor’s degree. He doesn’t know if he will someday set his sights on a master’s degree, but he said he wouldn’t mind living in a big city for a while at some point.
