Tiger’s win District 3-4A championship
It took all but two seconds for the Frenship football team to outlast the Randall Raiders Friday for the District 3-4A championship at Peoples Bank Stadium in Wolfforth.
Randall kept a lead over the Tigers for the first two and a half quarters, but injuries to the Raider’s two most offensively productive players leveled the playing field and the Tigers took advantage.
Despite Randall starting quarterback Collin Bowen being knocked out with a possible broken collarbone and running back Tyler Junell being sidelined with an ankle injury, the Raiders continued to post a threat to the Tigers undefeated season. Randall marched down the field trailing by one point, and set themselves in position for a 30-yard game-winning field goal with six seconds remaining on the clock.
The kick went wide right, and the Tigers secured the District championship with two-seconds remaining on the clock in a 29-29 victory over the Raiders.
“If Bowen doesn’t get hurt right there we don’t win this football game,” said Frenship head coach Brad Davis. “I really feel that way. He was the difference maker in the game and when he went down it kind of equalized things. We felt very fortunate to win this game.”
Frenship can now go into its last game against Dumas knowing they are the outright District 3-4A champions.
For the first half against Randall, the Raiders looked to control the tempo of the game.
Lead by Bowen’s 154 yards rushing and a touchdown in two quarters, Randall had an offensive answer to ever Tiger touchdown. Bowen was backed by Junell who had 127 yards rushing.
The Raiders took a 21-17 lead into the first half and hit the gates running at the start of the second half scoring on its first drive with a 4-yard run from JD Allen.
Then late in the third quarter, with a 28-17 lead, Bowen was hit after attempting a pass. He would stay sidelined for the remainder of the game with an injury to his right arm.
The Tigers took advantage with Bowen out. Backup quarterback Austin Castillo had trouble holding on to the ball recording three fumbles which fueled a Tiger comeback.
The Tigers recovered his first of three fumbles to end a Randall drive in Tiger territory. His second fumble recovered by the Tiger defense set up a 15-yard touchdown pass from Tucker Tuberville to Chad Quisenberry to bring the Tigers within five points. A missed two-point conversion made the score 28-23.
With time winding down in the fourth quarter, Castillo fumbled again while running the ball. Kyle Rutherford scooped up the ball and he returned the turnover 38 yards for the go-ahead touchdown.
“My first thought was to fall on top of the ball to secure it for our offense,” said Rutherford. “I saw I had a little bit of room so I scooped it up and it ended up working out.”
Randall wouldn’t go away that easy. The Raiders managed the time with the help of a Tiger pass interference penalty that kept the drive alive. Finally the Raiders settled at the Tiger red zone.
The Tigers used their last timeout to ice Randall kicker Brad Wilkerson and it worked as the kick sailed wide right.
“These guys deserve this win,” said Rutherford. “We have worked so hard all season and we knew how big this game was. We knew we had a chance when (Bowen) went down. It is unfortunate he got hurt, but we saw the opportunity and turned up the intensity. We wanted this win.”
