Frenship baseball report: March 4, 2011

Coming up: Frenship competes at the Tournament of Champions this weekened at Midland. They opened the Tournament Thursday against Midland Lee and played Midland High later in the day.

The Tigers will continue the tournament at 1 p.m. Friday against El Paso El Dorado. Frenship plays at 1 p.m. Saturday against Odessa and at 4 p.m. against El Paso Montwood. The Tigers open District 3-4A play at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at Palo Duro.

Looking Back: Frenship fell victim to errors during its first day at the Rock Hardball Classic at Round Rock last weekend. The Tigers committed nine fielding errors in a 7-0 loss to Southlake Carroll during the tournament opener. The Tigers tied Converse Judson 7-7 in extra innings later in the day.

The Tigers pitching was the highlight of the first day of the tournament, allowing only five earned runs in 17 innings.

Chad Quisenberry allowed two earned runs while striking out four in four innings against Carroll.

But he couldn’t match the Dragons’ John Curtiss, who struck out nine and allowed only three singles in five scoreless innings.

Quisenberry doubled twice in the 10-inning game against Judson, while Cade Davis doubled, tripled and drove in two runs. Frenship starter Stephen Smith allowed only two earned runs and five hits in eight innings, striking out 11.

The Tigers’ pitching shined during the second day of the tournament with starters Kyle Rutherfod and Xavier Vasquez combining for 17 strikeouts in a 1-1 tie to Brenham and a 8-3 victory over Round Rock McNeil during the second day of the tournament.

Rutherford struck out nine and allowed only two hits in six innings against top-ranked Brenham, the defending Class 4A state champion. Cade Davis followed with four scoreless innings, and the game was called after 10 because of a predetermined time limit.

Vasquez then fanned eight in a complete game against McNeil, allowing one earned run, five hits and two walks. Josh Vasquez finished 3-for-4 offensively with two runs scored, Josh Moreno went 2-for-3 with two runs, and Bryndan Arredondo and Brandon Walker drove in two apiece.
