Frenship’s passing game, defense key area round rout of Canutillo

PECOS – Canutillo did as good a job as any team has this year of slowing down the Frenship running game. The difference in 2008 is the Tigers are not a one-dimensional team.

Given free range and plenty of time by his offensive line, Frenship quarterback Tyler Lloyd threw for 222 yards and two touchdowns, both to Lance Ratliff, who also recovered a fumble in the end zone and kicked a couple of field goals, as the No. 6 Tigers routed Canutillo 48-7 in a Class 4A Division I area playoff Saturday at Eagle Stadium.

“I felt like me and the receivers were on the same page today and the line picked up all the stunts they had,” said Lloyd, who completed 9 of 15 passes without an interception. “We made it a point to get the passing game going this week and I felt like I went out there and did a decent job.”

Frenship (12-0) advances to the regional semifinals and will face Denton Ryan (8-3) on Friday at Lowrey Field, with a start time tentatively set for 7 p.m.

Frenship entered Saturday having outscored its last three area round opponents by a combined score of 145-0, and quickly showed Canutillo (9-3) would be nothing more than the next victim.

The Eagles may have shut down Frenship’s ground attack, but the Tigers were even better at doing the same. Canutillo played without 2,000-yard rusher John Dela Rosa, who broke a collarbone in last week’s win over El Paso Andress, and without him the Eagles had just 69 yards on the ground.

“We didn’t know exactly how bad the injury was,” Frenship coach Brad Davis said. “He would have made a difference the way the game went but our kids played hard and I’m very proud of them. .”

Canutillo’s first three drives all ended in punts and all three set the Tigers up with short fields they turned into scoring drives. The Eagles’ next two possessions ended in turnovers, with Jedidiah Mannon returning an interception 17 yards for a touchdown and Nick Britton picking off another pass that led to another score and a 28-0 lead at halftime.

Lloyd finished off Frenship’s first scoring drive with a 5-yard scoring strike to Ratliff and hit Ben Christian from 12 yards out on the next possession before Mannon’s return made it 21-0. Preston Dotson appeared to be heading into the end zone on Frenship’s next drive but fumbled into the end zone, and Ratliff fell on it just before it went out of bounds for the touchdown.

Ratliff would make it 35-0 when he caught a 74-yard touchdown from Lloyd on the third play of the third quarter, then kicked field goals of 24 and 27 yards before Davis turned the fourth quarter over to the backups.

“Last year was one of those things where we were one-sided on the run, and we did a god job at it,” Ratliff said. “This year we got a lot better at opening up the playbook and throwing better against anybody.”

Even the substitutes got into the act as backup quarterback Zach Edwards scrambled away from pressure and tossed a 60-yard touchdown to Asheton Hastings early in the fourth to make it 48-0.
