Alex Brown is a sixth grade student doing big things.

The Frenship Middle School student placed second out of 34 competitors last weekend during the North State gymnastics meet at Metroplex Gymnastics in Allen, Texas.

“It is exciting,” said Brown. “I try my best and try to stay focused.”

At North State, Brown placed ninth in the vault, first in uneven bars, second in balance beam, and 13th in the floor competition.

Brown’s strongest event, the uneven bars, could be the result of a Christmas gift she received last year.

“My parents bought a bar for my basement,” said Brown.

The second place finish at North State qualifies Brown for the state competition today at Frisco. The competition is hosted by World Olympic Gymnastics Academy.

Brown will be competing among the top 16 gymnasts in the state.

TEGA head coach Al Gamboa has helped Brown along the way.

“Going into North State, we mentioned to her that she has the talent to do well,” said Gamboa. “She is focused and listens well. We are allowed to see how others have scored, and she (Brown) ranks amongst the top.”

Brown said she thinks she can place in the top three.

“Because Al (Gamboa) said so,” said Brown.
