Tiger football heading over state line

Frenship will get the opportunity to see what other states have to offer in football this week.

The Tigers will face Hobbs High School at 7:30 p.m. at Memorial Stadium in Hobbs, N.M. Friday.

“We haven’t played them, but we expect them to be pretty good,” said Don Black, Frenship defensive coordinator. “We have watched film on them and we are ready for a battle.”

Hobbs is in the District 4-5A division of New Mexico.

Despite its 1-3 record, Frenship could have its hands full.

Three-of-four games for the Eagles have been decided by less than a touchdown.

“They are only 1-3, but perhaps that is because of their schedule,” said Black. “They played Artesia really tough, and Artesia is historically a good football team. They (Hobbs) also barely lost to (Los Cruces) Onate last week, and they are supposed to be a pretty big and talented team.”

The Hobbs offense is ran by quarterback Kyle Niemeyer, 6-foot 2 and 185 pounds.

“He (Niemeyer) is the best athlete on the team,” said Black. “He has the ability to pass the ball pretty good, but he is also very fast and likes to scramble. He is a good scrambler.”

The Tigers have faced other teams with scrambling quarterbacks this year and have managed to do a good job.

Hobbs passes the ball 70 percent of the time and they never leave the shotgun formation.

Niemeyer likes to throw to Anthony Aguilar 6-0, and Jared Baeza 5-11.

“Their two receivers might cause some problems for us because they have height and our defensive backs are a little shorter,” said Black. “Their kids are fairly taller and they like to go up and grab the ball.”

Michael Andrews will get most of the touches from the Hobbs running game.

The offensive line only returned two starters and is still adjusting to playing at the varsity level.

The Eagle defense returned seven starters.

Defensive end Jureece Thompson, 6-6 and 240 pounds has a knack for causing distruption in the backfield. He also has the ability to drop back into coverage.
