Bennett Elementary student tops district spelling bee

Six elementary students battled for top honors at the Frenship Independent School District Spelling Bee on Friday morning at Bennett Elementary School.

The bee went 23 rounds, with Bennett Elementary School speller Jane Whiting eventually outlasting North Ridge Elementary School’s Kenna Ruckey.

From the minds of Bennett Elementary PTA members comes the Caring and Sharing Closet.

Kendra Rejcek is president of the PTA and co-chair of the Caring and Sharing Close. She said Bennett has 48% Title One students, meaning they get a free breakfast and lunch because of their families’ income. That’s where the idea for the Caring and Sharing Closet came into play.

Bennett helps set world record

Young students at Bennett Elementary School joined hundreds of thousands of other students across the country Thursday in reading the story of “Corduroy,” a book about a stuffed bear who gets a new home.

“It’s not just us” reading ‘Corduroy,’ Bennett Librarian Jennifer Morgan said to first graders from Bridget Thomas’ class. “It’s not just Bennett. It’s boys and girls throughout the country.
