The Frenship Tigers football team will open the 2010 season Friday at Lowrey Field when it faces Coronado High School at 7:30 p.m.

After completing two-a-days and two scrimmages, the Tigers already are in a better position than they were last season when injuries and transfers plagued an experienced Tiger team. The result was a cast of new faces and a 7-5 record.

At this time last season, Frenship lost its two top running backs when they transferred schools within two weeks of the season opener. The Tigers also lost its top receiver with a season-ending knee injury.

City sees 18 percent drop in sales tax; lower alcohol sales cited

Sales tax revenues are down almost $43,000, or 18 percent, from a year ago at this time in Wolfforth, a decrease the city attributes to an election in May of 2009 in which Lubbock County residents approved countywide alcohol sales.

City Secretary Debbie Youngblood said in a comparison of the year through July of last year and the year through July of this year, sales tax revenues are down by $42,754.

“I don’t know that the whole entire amount is attributable to alcohol,” she said. “When the choice was Wolfforth or the Strip, we did a lot of business.”
